The international foundations for hotel ratings

Hotel ratings are based on a number of bases that differ from one side to the other, as some prefer to follow the opinions of customers. Some prefer hotels that may deal with them personally or from a trusted person. However, the international foundations differ in their opinion, as they base their evaluation on firm foundations in force in all countries of the world.

Common hotel types

These hotel types are the most common, and you can find them all over the world:

Hotel chain

Also known as a “branded hotel,” a hotel chain affiliated with a brand may have strict guidelines for amenities and design. Some hotel chains are part of a larger ownership group, while others have independent owners but follow the same brand standards. Popular hotel chains are the Courtyard, Holiday Inn, and Westin.

Independent hotel

It is an independently owned and operated hotel with no brand standards or guidelines.

Boutique hotel

A hotel featuring unique design and personalized service, often with a local theme or influences. Boutique hotels are usually small (less than 100 rooms) and independently owned. However, some boutique hotels are part of groups such as Leading Hotels of the World or chains such as Curio Collection by Hilton.

Resort

A resort that provides everything necessary for a vacation on site, such as restaurants, swimming pools, spas, recreational facilities, kids clubs, and entertainment venues. Popular resort brands include Sandals and Four Seasons, although there are many independent resorts as well.

Airport Hotel

The airport hotel is located near the airport. Airport hotels usually provide a free shuttle to the airport for a smooth transfer.

Conference hotel

Catering to business travelers and groups, the convention hotels have ample event space, catering services, and event planners to suit trade shows, conferences or other large events.

All-Suite Hotel

Suite-style guestroom hotels only, which are guestrooms with separate sleeping and living areas.

Extended-stay hotel

Designed for people who need a place to stay for several weeks or months, extended-stay hotels offer guestrooms with full kitchens and more spacious layouts than any standard hotel. Some extended-stay hotels also offer laundry services and organize social events.

Motel

Motels are often located next to a highway in rural areas and provide basic amenities at a low price.

Apart-Hotel

The aparthotel consists of apartment-style units that can have full kitchens and multiple bedrooms. The hotel apartments offer all hotel services, such as reception and housekeeping.

Youth hostel (Hostel)

Popular with young travelers on a budget, hostels offer beds (usually bunk beds) in dormitory rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Other on-site amenities can include lounge areas, bars, games, restaurants, and a self-serve laundry.

star ratings

Star ratings give travelers information about the quality level of a particular hotel. In general, hotels with higher star ratings can sell at higher rates. Star ratings are assigned either by a third-party rating entity, such as Forbes Travel Guide or by a government agency in certain countries, such as Australia and the United Kingdom.

1 star hotel

It has basic amenities, maybe with shared bathrooms or no dining options.

2 stars hotel

Hotels with basic amenities, slightly elevated decor, breakfast service, and/or common areas such as the lobby or gym.

3 stars hotel

Full-service hotels with a restaurant, front desk, deliberate decoration, and housekeeping.

4 stars hotel

Upscale hotels with on-site dining, premium amenities, and a premium look.

5 stars hotel

Luxurious accommodation with personalized service, fine dining, wellness facilities and elegant design.

7 stars hotel

Although not officially part of the star rating system, a few of the “7-star hotels” in destinations such as Dubai and Fiji have amenities that are so superior that a five-star rating does not cover them.

What does each level of hotel star actually mean?

There is no direct answer to explicitly specifying each star rating. However, there are some general guidelines that consumers should understand. First, hotel star systems measure the quality of the property’s facilities. This is crucial. While front desk service may be great, a cheerful greeting at check-in will not change the hotel’s star rating. More star hotels have more facilities, such as large rooms, swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and bathtubs.
